Florence Nightingale lived in our local area as a young girl. She is most famous as ‘The Lady with the Lamp’ as a result of her work nursing soldiers during the Crimean War.
However, we also admire her for values towards reforming the Rule of Law in helping to make nursing a professional role for women, and her fight for Individual Liberty - expanding the acceptable forms of female participation in the workforce.
Florence also showed a Respect and understanding of those less fortunate than herself as she campaigned for better healthcare for all sections of British society. She was keen to share her medical knowledge not only with those of higher education – she sometimes wrote in simple English which could more easily be understood by those with poor literary skills.
